Minister for Family Affairs Corinne Cahen recently confirmed that since the start of the pandemic, 324 people had died with or from the coronavirus in retirement and nursery homes.

One of the clusters occurred in the "Vitalhome", a facility for assisted living in Kayl.

The local section of the Democratic Party (DP), which is an opposition party in Kayl's municipal council, criticises the government's communication strategy and demands the launch of an investigation into the matter.

About a fifth of the 39 Vitalhome residents has died following a Covid-19 infection. 25 residents were tested positive inn addition to 13 staff members, all since the beginning of March. Local DP politicians Patrick Krings and Romain Becker have published a letter, in which they show themselves concerned that it was even possible for such infection chains to occur in the facility.

Krings stated that such events are always followed by the authorities' attempt "to cover them up". According to the DP politician, rumours spreading across the village are always worse than just telling people the truth.

Krings stressed that he does not care that his own party is in the government which he is criticising, stating that it is not about the party, but about the people in charge.

The local politician also made it clear that he does not accuse Kayl's municipal executive, composed of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) and the Green Party (Déi Gréng), of any wrongdoing in the matter. Krings does call on the municipal council to urge the government to launch an investigation into the affair Vitalhome.

Kayl's LSAP mayor John Lorent, however, is not convinced that this is the right way to go, as the Vitalhome is a private co-ownership. While Lorent is not sure whether the municipality is in a position to push for an investigation, he does agree with Krings that it needs to be found out how this situation could happen.

The Kayl mayor has in fact once again gotten in touch with the manager of the facility and requested further information.
