Meteolux have upgraded Saturday's orange alert to RED as the heatwave bites.

Overall temperatures are expected to stay around 35°C, with the potential to hit 38°C in certain areas on Saturday and Sunday.

The following days are also predicted to be extremely hot, with scattered thunderstorms in parts of the country.

Luxembourg's Director of Health ordered the release of Level 3, the red alert as part of the 2020 action plan in case of extreme heat (heat plan).

Those hoping to spend the heatwave on the beaches of Luxembourg's lakes may be disappointed, as spots sold out at Upper Sûre Lake last week.

Meteolux has also added information concerning the ozone pollution to the forecast, as levels will rise to 180 µg/m3 over the coming days.

Those sensitive to the pollution, such as the elderly, young children and those with respiratory and cardiac disorders, should avoid spending too much time outside.

The heatwave plan allows people 75 years of age or older, living alone (or with an invalid), with limited autonomy, little surrounded and without assistance from the addiction insurance, to register or be registered to receive monitoring visits and hydration assistance in case of high heat.

The triggering of the red alert involves the implementation of the programme of visits of people as retained on these lists pre-established by the Luxembourg Red Cross. The visits, operated by COPAS (with the home care and assistance networks), take effect from 8 August.

The precautions that prevail during the pandemic, and which are implemented by the aid and care networks during any home visit, remain in force.
