The section of the motorway was closed for half an hour to allow emergency services to access the burning lorry, which was moved to the hard shoulder once the driver noticed the fire. He was able to uncouple the back of the lorry from the cab before the fire spread.

According to Grevenmacher-Mertert fire fighters, extinguishing work was not easy. The trailer was filled with cardboard cartons and had to be unloaded by hand before the fire could be completely extinguished. A specialist company was called to the scene to clear the motorway.

Traffic was limited to one lane throughout the night in the wake of the incident.

Reports said that no one was injured in the fire, which was attended by fire fighters from Canach, Flaxweiler, Grevenmacher-Mertert, Luxembourg City and Niederanven.
